Fillings
Missoula, MT

Rendering of teeth with 3 filling materials at Roth Family Dentistry in Missoula, MTWhen you suffer from a cavity or a damaged tooth, our staff at Roth Family Dentistry will often perform a filling to help return the tooth to its normal shape and return functionality to the area. This is important because without a filling, your tooth may be easily damaged, decay farther, and eventually fall out due to severe damage to the nerve in the root of your tooth. Fillings are a relatively simple process and can usually be accomplished in one visit to our office.

What to Expect From a Filling

If you suffer from tooth decay, the process to remove it and add a filling takes around an hour. We will first perform a physical examination of your teeth and take an x-ray to help us identify the extent of the cavity. This helps us prepare accordingly so we know how much of the tooth we are going to remove before starting the procedure. We will then numb the area with local anesthesia and give it a few minutes to fully settle into your gums, lips, and surrounding tissue to decrease the discomfort associated with the procedure. You should not feel any pain and will only feel pressure. We will then remove the decay and immediately add a filling to the area. This will help fill the area where we removed part of the tooth and provide full functionality back to your tooth. It will also prevent any further bacteria and decay from overtaking the surrounding area of the tooth.

The Different Types of Fillings

When you get a filling, you will have several options to choose from. There are five different types of fillings, and our staff will help you decide which one is the most appropriate for your situation.

Composite fillings are the most common fillings. These fillings are composed of glass or quartz and are made to match the color of your surrounding teeth. These types of fillings are durable enough for anyone with a small to moderate sized cavity and can withstand most pressure you place on it. However, they are not structurally sound enough to help people who have a large cavity or area of decay since they require enough support from your actual tooth to be effective.

Amalgam fillings have been around for over a century and were the most commonly used material for fillings throughout the history of dentistry. These fillings are some of the most durable since they are created from several metallic elements. However, they are the most noticeable when you laugh or smile and do not blend in with your surrounding tooth structure. However, they do have the benefit of being the least expensive filling. As a result, they are often placed on molars.

The other three types of fillings include ceramic, glass ionomer, and metal. These three are the least common either due to their price or lack of durability. Our office will usually recommend a composite or amalgam filling since it is usually the best option.
